Ecsite Space Group
The Ecsite Space Group was launched in 2012, answering the need for closer collaboration between science centres, space agencies, and communication professionals to make space science more accessible to the public.
Coordinated by Ecsite and the European Space Agency (ESA), the group builds bridges between museums, academia, industry, and the wider public, sharing Europe’s space activities and supporting new partnerships.
The Space Group is now a dynamic network connecting science institutions, space professionals, and science communicators across Europe. It fosters cooperation through joint projects, public events, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Participants in the Ecsite Space Group share experiences, tools, and best practices to improve how space science is communicated to the public. It promotes collaboration through co-developed exhibitions, public engagement activities, and the dissemination of educational materials and formats.
The group also offers a valuable channel to keep up with developments in the space sector, including perspectives and resources shared by the European Space Agency (ESA). These interactions allow members to explore how such materials can enhance their public engagement work and to reflect on shared concerns and approaches with peers from across Europe.
We sincerely thank ESA for its ongoing support, which continues to boost the impact of the group’s activities and strengthen ties with the broader space sector.
The Ecsite Space Group takes part in the Ecsite Conference every year, contributing to space-related sessions and engaging with the wider science communication community. As part of its conference presence in 2025, the group hosted a Deep Dive, a longer-format session for in-depth dialogue and collaboration, and an ESA session, which highlighted immersive technologies, creative storytelling, and inclusive strategies through inspiring case studies and expert contributions from science centres, museums, and ESA representatives.
In addition, the network holds an annual in-person meeting and, in 2025, will organise two online gatherings focused on knowledge exchange and project updates.
The group regularly collects feedback through sessions, meetings, and open conversations with those involved. This inclusive approach ensures that the initiative continues to respond to its evolving needs and interests.
The Ecsite Space Group brings together a vibrant and diverse community of professionals across Europe and beyond who are committed to the communication of space. Its members represent science centres, museums, planetariums, universities, research institutes, space agencies, non-profit organisations, and industry, working together to foster public engagement with space-related science, technology, and exploration.
We would also like to thank all individuals and organisations who contributed their time, ideas, and enthusiasm to the group. Your involvement is what makes this network active, responsive, and meaningful.
Participation is open to anyone interested in sharing and developing innovative approaches to communicating space science.
